Résumé
The concept of myth has been present in African writings from pre-colonial to post-colonial, through colonial diaries, as myths seem to illustrate principles of African history. Clark presents myths from different perspectives, such as tools for oppressive leaders to maintain power structures, tools for liberation struggles to challenge dominant narratives, and inspiration to mediate social change. Postcolonial and linguistic semiotic theories are the methodological approaches used to analyse selected poems in J.P. Clark's A Decade of Tongues and State of the Union in this article, which points to the complex and dynamic interplay between myths, power structures in governance and the struggle for liberation in modern African societies
